The town is situated on the right See also:bank of the See also:river Karatoya. Pop. (19o1) 7094. The DISTRICT OF BOGRA, which was first formed in 1821, lies See also:west of the See also:main channel of the See also:Brahmaputra. It contains an See also:area of 1359 sq. m. In 1901 the See also:population (on a reduced area) was 854,533, showing an increase of II % in the See also:decade. The district stretches out in a level See also:plain, intersected by numerous streams and dotted with patches of See also:jungle. The Karatoya river flows from See also:north to See also:south, dividing it into two portions, possessing very distinct characteristics. The eastern See also:tract consists of See also:rich alluvial See also:soil, well watered, and subject to fertilizing inundations, yielding heavy crops of coarse See also:rice, oil-seeds and jute. The western portion of the district is high-lying and produces the-finer qualities of rice. The See also:principal See also:rivers are formed by the different channels of the Brahmaputra, which river here bears the See also:local names of the Konai, the Daokoba and the Jamuna, the last forming a portion of the eastern boundary of the district. Its See also:bed is studded with alluvial islands. The Brahmaputra and its channels, together with three See also:minor streams, the Bangali, Karatoya and Atrai, afford admirable facilities for See also:commerce, and render every See also:part of the district accessible to native See also:cargo boats of large See also:burden. The rivers swarm with See also:fish. The formerproduction of See also:indigo is See also:extinct, and the See also:industry of See also:silk-See also:spinning is decaying, There is no town with as many as 1o,000 inhabitants, See also:trade being conducted at See also:riverside marts.
