JEAN See also:FRANCOIS (1774-1857) , See also:French classical See also:scholar, was See also:born at See also:Paris on the 12th of See also:August 1774. In 1792 he entered the public service during the See also:administration of See also:General See also:Dumouriez. Driven from it in 1795, he was restored by Lucien See also:Bonaparte, during whose See also:time of See also:office he served as secretary to the prefecture of the Upper See also:Marne. He then definitely resigned public employment and devoted him-self to the study of See also:Greek. In 1809 he was appointed See also:deputy See also:professor of Greek at the See also:faculty of letters at Paris, and titular professor in 1813 on the See also:death of P. H. See also:Larcher. In 1828 he succeeded J. B. See also:Gail in the See also:chair of Greek at the See also:College de See also:France. He also held the offices of librarian of the Bibliotheque du Roi, and of perpetual secretary of the Academie See also:des See also:Inscriptions. He died on the 8th of See also:September 1857.

attention to later Greek literature: See also:Philostratus, Heroica (1806) and Epistolae (1842); See also:Marinus, Vita procli (1814); Tiberius Rhetor, De Figuris (1815) ; Nicetas Eugenianus, Drosilla et Charicles (1819); Herodian, Partitiones (1819); See also:Aristaenetus, Epistolae (1822); See also:Eunapius, Vitae Sophistarum (1822); See also:Babrius, Fables (1844); See also:Tzetzes, Allegoriae Iliados (1851); and a Collection of Greek Poets in 24 vols. The Anecdota Graeca (1829–1833) and Anecdota Nova (1844) are important for See also:Byzantine See also:history and the Greek grammarians. A selection of his papers was published by F. Colincamp, Critique litteraire sous le premier See also:Empire (1863), vol. i. of which contains a See also:complete See also:list of his See also:works, and a " See also:Notice Historique sur See also:Monsieur B.," by Naudet.
