BRIGNOLES , a See also:

town in the See also:department of See also:Var in the S.E. of See also:France, 36 m. by See also:rail N. of See also:Toulon. Pop. (1906) 3639. It is built at a height of 754 ft. above the See also:sea-level, in a fertile valley, and on the right See also:bank of the Carami See also:river. It contains the old summer See also:palace of the See also:counts of See also:Provence, and has an active See also:trade, especially in prunes, known as prunes de Brignoles. Its old name was See also:Villa Puerorum, as the See also:children of the counts of Provence were often brought up here. It was sacked on several occasions during the religious See also:wars in the 16th See also:century. Twelve See also:miles to the N.W. is St Maximin (with a See also:fine See also:medieval See also:church), which is one of the best starting-points for the most famous See also:pilgrimage resort in Provence, the Sainte See also:Baume, wherein St See also:Mary Magdalene is said to have taken See also:refuge.
