BRIONIAN ISLANDS , a See also:

group of small islands, in the Adriatic See also:Sea, off the See also:west See also:coast of See also:Istria, from which they are separated by the narrow See also:Canale di Fasana. They belong to See also:Austria and are twelve in number. Up to a See also:recent See also:period they were chiefly noted for their quarries, which have been worked for centuries and have supplied material not only for the palaces and See also:bridges of See also:Venice and the whole Adriatic coast, but latterly for See also:Vienna and See also:Berlin also. As they command the entrance to the See also:naval See also:harbour of See also:Pola, a strong fortress, Fort Tegctthoff," has been erected on the largest of them (Brioni), together with See also:minor fortifications on some of the others. The islands are inhabited by about too See also:Italian quarrymen.
