CAMPINAS ,- an inland See also:

city of the See also:state of Sao Paulo, See also:Brazil, 65 m. by See also:rail NM. of the city of Sao Paulo and 114 M. from the See also:port of See also:Santos, with which it is connected by the Paulista & Sao Paulo railway. Pop. (189o) of the city and See also:municipality, 33,921. Campinas is the commercial centre of one of the See also:oldest See also:coffee-producing districts of the state and the outlet for a See also:rich and' extensive' 'agricultural region lying farther inland. The Mogyana railway starts from this point and extends See also:north to Uberaba, See also:Minas Geraes, while the Paulista lines extend north-See also:west into new and very fertile regions. Coffee is the See also:staple See also:production, though See also:Indian See also:corn, mandioca and See also:fruit are produced largely for See also:local See also:consumption. The city is built in a bowl-like depression of the' See also:great central See also:plateau, and the drainage from ' the surrounding hillsides has produced a dangerously insanitary See also:condition, from which one or two virulent See also:fever epidemics have resulted.
