CARAVAGGIO, POLIDORO CALDARA DA (1495 or 1492-1543) , a celebrated painter of See also:frieze and other decorations in the Vatican. His merits were such that, while a See also:mere See also:mortar-See also:carrier to the artists engaged in that See also:work, he attracted the admiration of See also:Raphael, then employed on his See also:great pictures in the Loggie of the See also:palace. Polidoro's See also:works, as well as those of his See also:master, Maturino of See also:Florence, have mostly perished, but are well known by the See also:fine etchings of P. S. See also:Bartoli, C. See also:Alberti, &c. On the See also:sack of See also:Rome by the See also:army of the See also:Constable de See also:Bourbon in 1527, Polidoro fled to See also:Naples. Thence he went to See also:Messina, where he was much employed, and gained a considerable See also:fortune, with which he was about to return to the mainland of See also:Italy when he was robbed and murdered by an assistant, Tonno Calabrese, in 1543. Two of his See also:principal paintings are a Crucifixion, painted in Messina, and " See also:Christ bearing the See also:Cross " in the Naples See also:gallery.
