city of See also:Providence See also:county, Rhode See also:Island, U.S.A., on the See also:Blackstone See also:river, about 5 m. N. of Providence. Pop. (1900) 18,167; (1905, See also:state See also:census) 19,446, of whom 8792 were See also:foreign-See also:born, 4164 being See also:French-See also:Canadian, 1587 being See also:English, and 1292 being Irish; (1910) 22,754. It is served by the New See also:York, New Haven & See also:Hartford railway. The Blackstone furnishes See also:good See also:water-See also:power, and the See also:chief See also:industry of the city is the manufacture of See also:cotton goods; other important See also:industries are the refining of See also:copper and the manufacture of woollens, silks and See also:hair-See also:cloth. The See also:total value of the factory,product in 1905 was $5,090,984, being 12.9% more than in 1900. A See also:settlement was established here about 1763 and was first a See also:part of Smithfield, and then, after 1877, of See also:Lincoln. About 178o a See also:chocolate See also:mill was erected, and from then until 1827 the settlement was known as Chocolateville. It was incorporated as the Central Falls See also:Fire See also:District of Smithfield in 1847, and in 1895 was chartered as a city.
