CERTALDO , a See also:

town of See also:Tuscany, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Florence, 35 M. S.S.W. by See also:rail and 18 m. See also:direct from the town of Florence. Pop. (1901) town, 4552; See also:commune, 9120. It was the See also:home of the See also:family of Giovanni See also:Boccaccio, who died and was buried here in 1375. His See also:house (of red See also:brick, like the other old houses of the town) was restored in 1823 and fitted up with old See also:furniture. A statue of him was erected in the See also:principal square in 1875. The Palazzo Pretorio, or Vicariale, the See also:residence of the Florentine See also:governors, recently restored to its See also:original See also:condition, has a picturesque See also:facade and See also:court adorned with coats of arms, and in the interior are various frescoes dating from the 13th to the 16th See also:century. The town as a whole is picturesque, and lies on a See also:hill 426 ft. above See also:sea-level. See R. Pantini, S. Gimignano e Certaldo (See also:Bergamo, 1904), p.101 seq.
