CHAUVIGNY , a See also:

town of western See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Vienne, 20 M. E. of See also:Poitiers by See also:rail. Pop. (See also:Icon) 2326. The town is finely situated overlooking the Vienne and a small torrent, and has two interesting Romanesque churches, both restored in See also:modern times. There are also ruins of a See also:chateau of the bishops of Poitiers, and of other strongholds. Near Chauvigny is the curious See also:bone-cavern of Jioux, the entrance to which is fortified by large blocks of See also:stone. The town carries on See also:lime-burning and See also:plaster-manufacture, and there are stone quarries in the vicinity. See also:Trade is in See also:wool and feathers.
