CHERSO , an See also:island in the Adriatic See also:Sea, off the See also:east See also:coast of See also:Istria, from which it is separated by the channel of Farasina. Pop. (1900) 8274. It is situated in the Gulf of Quarnero, and is connected with the island of See also:Lussin, lying on the S.W. by a turn See also:bridge over the small channel of Ossero, and with the island of See also:Veglia, lying on the E. by the See also:Canale di Mezzo. These three are the See also:principal islands of the Quarnero See also:group, and See also:form together the administrative See also:district of Lussin in the See also:Austrian crownland of Istria. Cherso is an elongated island about 40 M. See also:long, 14 to 7 M. wide, and has an See also:area of 150 sq. m. It is traversed by a range of mountains, which attain in the See also:peak of Syss an See also:altitude of 2090 ft. and form natural terraces, planted with vines and See also:olive trees, specially in . the See also:middle and See also:southern parts of the island. The See also:northern See also:part is covered with bushes of See also:laurel and See also:mastic, but there are scarcely any large trees. There is a scarcity of springs, and the houses are generally furnished with cisterns for See also:rain See also:water. In the centre of the island is an interesting See also:lake called the Vrana or See also:Crow's Lake, situated at an altitude of 40 ft. above, the level of the sea, 31 M. long, 1 in, wide and 184 ft. deep. This lake is in all See also:probability fed by subterranean See also:sources.. The See also:chief See also:town of the island is Cherso, situated on the See also:west coast.
