CHIERI , a See also:town and episcopal see of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Turin, 13 M. S.E. by See also:rail and 8 m. by road from the town of Turin. Pop. (1901) 11,929 (town), 13,803 (See also:commune). Its See also:Gothic See also:cathedral, founded in 1037 and reconstructed in 1405, is the largest in Piedmont, and has a 13th See also:century octagonal See also:baptistery. Chieri was subject to the See also:bishop of Turin in the 9th and loth centuries, it became See also:independent in the 11th century. In 1347 it submitted voluntarily to See also:Count Amedeus VI. of See also:Savoy to See also:save itself from the See also:marquis of Monferrato, and finally came under the dominion of Savoy in the 16th century. In 1785 it was made into a principality of the See also:duke of See also:Aosta. It was an See also:early centre of See also:trade and manufacture; and in the See also:middle of the 15th century produced about 100,000 pieces of See also:cotton goods per annum. See L.
