CLEITOR, or CLITOR , a See also:town of See also:ancient See also:Greece, in that See also:part of See also:Arcadia which corresponds to the See also:modern eparchy of Kalavryta in the nomos of Ells and See also:Achaea. It stood in a fertile See also:plain to the See also:south of Mt Chelmos, the highest See also:peak of the Aroanian u1. r6Mountains, and not far from a stream of its own name, which joined the Aroanius, or Katzana. In the neighbourhood was a See also:fountain, the See also:waters of which were said to deprive those who drank them of the See also:taste for See also:wine. The town was a See also:place of considerable importance in Arcadia, and its inhabitants were noted for their love of See also:liberty. It extended its territory over several neighbouring towns, and in the Theban See also:war fought against See also:Orchomenus. It joined the other Arcadian cities in the See also:foundation of See also:Megalopolis. As a member of the Achaean See also:league it was besieged by the Aetolians in 22o B.C., and was on several occasions the seat of the federal assemblies. It coined See also:money up to the See also:time of Septimius See also:Severus. The ruins, which See also:bear the See also:common name of Paleopoli, or Old See also:City, are still to be seen about 3 M. from a See also:village that preserves the ancient designation. The greater part of the walls which enclose an See also:area of about a mile and several of the semi-circular towers with which they were strengthened can be clearly made out; and there are also remains of three Doric temples. and a small See also:theatre.
