COMACCHIO , a See also:town of See also:Emilia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Ferrara, 30 M. E.S.E. by road from the town of Ferrara, on the level of the See also:sea, in the centre of the See also:lagoon of Valli di Comacchio, just N. of the See also:present mouth of the See also:Reno. Pop. (1901) 7944 (town), 10,745 (See also:commune). It is built on no less than thirteen different islets, joined by See also:bridges, and its See also:industries are the See also:fishery, which belongs to the commune, and the See also:salt-See also:works. The seaport of Magnavacca lies 4 M. to the See also:east. Comacchio appears as a See also:city in the 6th See also:century, and, owing to its position in the centre of the lagoons, was an important fortress. It was included in the " donation of See also:Pippin "; it was taken by the Venetians in 854, but afterwards came under the See also:government of the archbishops of See also:Ravenna; in 1299 it came under the dominion of the See also:house of See also:Este. In 1508 it became Venetian, but in 1597 was claimed by See also:Clement VIII. as a vacant See also:fief.
