CONDENSER , the name given to many forms of apparatus which have for their See also:

object the concentration of See also:matter, or bringing it into a smaller See also:volume, or the intensification of See also:energy. In See also:chemistry the word is applied to an apparatus which cools down, or condenses, a vapour to a liquid; reference should be made to the See also:article See also:DISTILLATION for the various types in use, and also to See also:GAS (Gas Manufacture) and See also:COAL See also:TAR; the See also:device for the condensation of the exhaust See also:steam of a steam-See also:engine is treated in the article STEAM-ENGINE. In woollen manufactures, " condensation " of the See also:wool is an important operation and is accomplished by means of a " condenser." The See also:term is also given—generally as a qualification, e.g. condensing-See also:syringe, condensing-See also:pump,—to apparatus by which See also:air or a vapour may be compressed. In See also:optics a " condenser " is a See also:lens, or See also:system of lenses, which serves to concentrate or bring the luminous rays to a See also:focus; it is specially an See also:adjunct to the See also:optical See also:lantern and See also:microscope. In See also:electrostatics a condenser is a device for concentrating an electrostatic See also:charge (see ELECTROSTATICS; See also:LEYDEN See also:JAR; See also:ELECTROPHORUS).
