At ten years of See also:age he succeeded his See also:father, See also:Leo IV., under the guardianship of his See also:mother See also:Irene (q.v.), who held the reins of See also:government for ten years. In 782 the See also:Arabs under See also:Harun al-Rashid penetrated as far as the See also:Bosporus, and exacted an See also:annual See also:tribute as the See also:price of an inglorious See also:peace (see See also:CALIPHATE, § C, 3 ad fin.). Even when Constantine came of age, Irene practically retained the supreme See also:power. At length Constantine had her arrested, but foolishly pardoned her shortly afterwards. Disastrous See also:campaigns against the Bulgarians and' Arabs afforded her an opportunity of rousing the contempt and hatred of the See also:people against their ruler. On his return to See also:Constantinople, Constantine managed to See also:escape to the See also:Asiatic See also:coast, but being brought back practically by force he was seized and blinded. According to some, he died on the same See also:day; according to others, he survived for several years. With Constantine VI. the Syrian (Isaurian) See also:dynasty became See also:extinct.
