DICTYS CRETENSIS , of See also:

Cnossus in See also:Crete, the supposed See also:companion of See also:Idomeneus during the Trojan See also:War, and author of a See also:diary of its events. The MS. of this See also:work, written in Phoenician characters, was said to have been found in his See also:tomb (enclosed in a leaden See also:box) at the See also:time of an See also:earthquake during the reign of See also:Nero, by whose See also:order it was translated into See also:Greek. In the 4th See also:century A.D. a certain See also:Lucius Septimius brought out Dictys Cretensis See also:Ephemeris See also:belli Trojani, which professed to be a Latin See also:translation of the Greek version. Scholars were not agreed whether any Greek See also:original really existed; but all doubt on the point was removed by the See also:discovery of a fragment in Greek amongst the papyri found by B. P. Grenfell and A. S. See also:Hunt in 1905-1906. Possibly the Latin Ephemeris was the work of Septimius himself. Its See also:chief See also:interest lies in the fact that (together with Dares Phrygius's De excidio Trojae) it was the source from which the Homeric legends were introduced into the romantic literature of the See also:middle ages.
