After some See also:minor publications he produced L'Evangile du peuple (1840), an exposition of the See also:life and See also:character of Jesus as a social reformer. This See also:work was considered an offence against See also:religion and decency, and Esquiros was fined and imprisoned. He was elected in 185o as a social democrat to the Legislative See also:Assembly, but was exiled in 1851 for his opposition to the See also:Empire. Returning to See also:France in 1869 he was again a member of the Legislative Assembly, and in 1876 was elected to the See also:senate. He died at See also:Versailles on the 12th of May 1876. He turned to See also:account his See also:residence in See also:England in L'Angleterre et la See also:vie anglaise (5 vols., 1859-1869).
