FOURMIES , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Nord, on an affluent of the Sambre, 39 M. S.E. of See also:Valenciennes by See also:rail. Pop. (1906) 13,308. It is one of the See also:chief centres in France for See also:wool combing and See also:spinning, and produces a See also:great variety of cloths. The See also:glass-See also:works of Fourmies date from 1599, and were the first established in the See also:north of France. See also:Iron is worked in the vicinity, and there are important forges and foundries. See also:Enamel-See also:ware is also manufactured. In 1891 labour troubles brought about military intervention and consequent bloodshed. A See also:board of See also:trade See also:arbitration and a school of See also:commerce and See also:industry are among the public institutions.
