FRISCHES HAFF , a See also:lagoon on the Baltic See also:coast of See also:Germany, within the provinces See also:East and See also:West See also:Prussia, between See also:Danzig and See also:Konigsberg. It is 52 M. in length, from 4 to 12 M. broad, 332 sq. in. in See also:area, and is separated from the Baltic by a narrow See also:spit or See also:bank of See also:land. This barrier was torn open by a See also:storm in 151o, and the channel thus formed, now dredged out to a See also:depth of 22 ft., affords a navigable passage for vessels. Into the Haff flow the Nogat, the See also:Elbing, the Passarge, the Pregel and the Frisching, from the last of which the name Frisches Haff probably arose.
