FROSTBURG , a- See also:town of Allegany See also:county, See also:Maryland, U.S.A., it m. W. of See also:Cumberland. Pop. (189o) 3804; (1900) 5274 (J78 See also:foreign-See also:born and 236 negroes); (1910) 6028. It is served by the Cumberland & See also:Pennsylvania railway and the Cumberland & Westernport electric railway. The town is about 2000 ft. above See also:sea-level on a See also:plateau between the See also:Great See also:Savage and Dams mountains, and its delightful scenery and See also:air have made it attractive as a summer resort. It is the seat of the second See also:state normal school, opened in 1904. Frostburg is in the midst of the See also:coal region of the state, and is itself almost completely under-See also:mined; it has planing See also:mills and manufactures large quantities of See also:fire-See also:brick. The See also:municipality owns and operates its See also:water-See also:works. Natural See also:gas is piped to Frostburg from the See also:West See also:Virginia See also:fields, 120 M. away. Frostburg was first settled in 1812; was called See also:Mount Pleasant until about 1830, when the See also:present name was substituted in See also:honour of Meshech See also:Frost, one of the town's founders; and was incorporated in 187o.
