It is built on a fertile See also:plain between the See also:rivers Tracunhaem and Capibaribe-mirim near their junction to See also:form the Goyanna See also:river, and is 15 M. from the See also:coast. It is surrounded by, and is the commercial centre for, one of the richest agricultural districts of the state, which produces See also:sugar, See also:rum, See also:coffee, See also:tobacco, See also:cotton, See also:cattle, hides and See also:castor oil. The Goyanna river is navigable for small vessels nearly up to the city, but its entrance is partly obstructed and difficult. Goyanna is one of the See also:oldest towns of the state, and was occupied by the Dutch from 1636 to 1654. It has several old-See also:style churches, an orphans' See also:asylum, See also:hospital and some small See also:industries.
