GRAVINA , a See also:

town and episcopal see of See also:Apulia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Bari, from which it is 63 m. S.W. by See also:rail (29 M. See also:direct), 1148 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 18,197. The town is probably of See also:medieval origin,. though some conjecture that it occupies the site of the See also:ancient See also:Blera, a See also:post station on the Via See also:Appia. The See also:cathedral is a See also:basilica of the 15th See also:century. The town is surrounded with walls and towers, and a See also:castle of the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. rises above the town, which later belonged to the See also:Orsini, See also:dukes of Gravina; just outside it are dwellings and a See also:church (S. Michele) all hewn in the See also:rock, and now abandoned. Prehistoric remains in the See also:district (remains of ancient settlements, tumuli, &c.) are described by V. di Cicco in Notizie degli scavi (1901), P. 217.
