GUARATINGUETA , a See also:

city of See also:Brazil in the eastern See also:part of the See also:state of Sao Paulo, 124 M. N.E. of the city of Sao Paulo. Pop. (189o) of the See also:municipality, which includes a large rural See also:district and the villages of Apparecida and Roseira, 30,690. The city, which was founded in 1651, stands on a fertile See also:plain 3 M. from the See also:Parahyba See also:river, and is the commercial centre of one of the See also:oldest agricultural districts of the state. The district produces large quantities of See also:coffee, and some See also:sugar, See also:Indian See also:corn and beans. See also:Cattle and pigs are raised. The city dwellings are for the most part constructed of rough wooden frames covered with mud, called laipa by the natives, and roofed with curved tiles. The Sao Paulo See also:branch of the Brazilian Central railway passes through the city, by which it is connected with Rio de Janeiro on one See also:side and Sao Paulo and See also:Santos on the other.
