GUARDA , an episcopal See also:

city and the See also:capital of an administrative See also:district bearing the same name, and formerly in the See also:province of See also:Beira, See also:Portugal; on the Guarda-See also:Abrantes and See also:Lisbon-Villar Formoso See also:railways. Pop. (1900) 6124. Guarda is situated 3370 ft. above See also:sea-level, at the See also:north-eastern extremity of the Serra da Estrella, overlooking the fertile valley of the See also:river C6a. It is surrounded by See also:ancient walls, and contains a ruined See also:castle, a See also:fine 16th-See also:century See also:cathedral and a See also:sanatorium for consumptives. Its See also:industries comprise the manufacture of coarse See also:cloth and the See also:sale of See also:grain, See also:wine and live stock. In 1199 Guarda was founded, on the site of the See also:Roman Lencia Oppidana, by Sancho I. of Portugal, who intended it, as its name implies, to be a " guard " against Moorish invasion. The administrative district of Guarda coincides with north-eastern Beira; pop. (1900), 261,630; See also:area, 1665 sq. m.
