GULBARGA , an See also:ancient See also:city of See also:India, situated in the See also:Nizam's dominions, 70 M. S.E. of See also:Sholapur. Pop. (Igor) 29,228. Origin-ally a See also:Hindu city, it was made the See also:capital of the Bahmani See also:kings when that See also:dynasty established their See also:independence in the See also:Deccan in 1347, and it remained such until 1422. The palaces, mosques and tombs of these kings still stand See also:half-ruined. The most notable See also:building is a See also:mosque modelled after that of See also:Cordova in See also:Spain, covering an See also:area of 38,000 sq. ft., which is almost unique in India as being entirely covered in. Since the opening of a station on the See also:Great India See also:Peninsula railway, Gulbarga has become a centre of See also:trade, with See also:cotton-See also:spinning and See also:weaving See also:mills. It is also the headquarters of a See also:district and See also:division of the same name. The district, as recently reconstituted, has an area of 6004 sq. m.; pop. (19o1), 1,041,067.
