HAROLD I . (d. 1040), surnamed Harefoot, the illegitimate son of Canute, See also:

king of See also:England, and IElfgifu of See also:Northampton. On the See also:death of his See also:father in 1035, he claimed the See also:crown of England in opposition to Canute's legitimate son, See also:Hardicanute. His claims were supported by See also:Leofric, See also:earl of See also:Mercia, and the See also:north; those of Hardicanute by his See also:mother, See also:Queen Emma, See also:Godwine, earl of the See also:West-See also:Saxons and the See also:south. Eventually Harold was temporarily elected See also:regent, pending a final See also:settlement on Hardicanute's return from See also:Denmark. Hardicanute, however, tarried, and meanwhile Harold's party increased rapidly. In 1037 he was definitely elected king, and banished Emma from the See also:kingdom. The only events of his brief reign are ineffectual inroads of the Welsh and Scots. Hardicanute was preparing to invade England in support of his claims when Harold died at See also:Oxford on the loth of See also:March 1040.
