HIRA , the See also:capital of an Arabian See also:kingdom, founded in the 2nd See also:century A.D., on the western edge of See also:Irak, was situated at 32° N., 44° 20' E., about 4 M. S.E. of See also:modern See also:Nejef, by the Sa'ade See also:canal, on the See also:shore of the See also:Bahr Nejef or Assyrium Stagnum. Its See also:kings governed the western shore of the See also:lower See also:Euphrates and of the See also:Persian Gulf, their kingdom extending inland to the See also:con-fines of the See also:Nejd. This Lakhmid kingdom was more or less dependent, during the four centuries of its existence, on the See also:Sassanian See also:empire, to which it formed a sort of buffer See also:state towards See also:Arabia. After the See also:battle of Kadesiya and the See also:founding of See also:Kufa by the See also:Arabs, Hira lost its importance and See also:fell into decay. The ruin mounds covering the See also:ancient site, while extensive, are insignificant in See also:appearance and give no indications of the existence of important buildings.
