HOWITZER (derived, through an earlier See also:form howitz, and the Ger. It is a See also:short and therefore comparatively See also:light See also:gun, which fires a heavy projectile at See also:low velocity. A high See also:angle of See also:elevation is always given and the angle of descent of the projectile is consequently steep (up to 70°). On this fact is based the See also:tactical use of the See also:modern howitzer. The See also:field howitzer is of the greatest value for " searching " trenches, folds of ground, localities, &c., which are invulnerable to See also:direct See also:fire, while the more powerful See also:siege howitzer has, since the introduction of modern See also:artillery and, above all, of modern projectiles, taken the foremost See also:place amongst the weapons used in siege warfare.
