HUARAZ , a See also:

city of See also:northern See also:Peru and See also:capital of the See also:department of See also:Ancachs, on the See also:left See also:bank of the Huaraz, or See also:Santa See also:river, about 190 M. N.N.W. of See also:Lima and 58 m. from the See also:coast. Pop. (1876) 4851, (1go6 estimate) 6000. Huaraz is situated in a narrow fertile valley of the Western See also:Cordillera, at a considerable See also:elevation above See also:sea-level, and has a mild See also:climate. A railway projected to connect Huaraz with the See also:port of Chimbote, on the See also:Bay of Chimbote, a few See also:miles S. of the mouth of the Santa river, was completed from Chimbote to Suchiman (33 m.) in 1872, when See also:work was suspended for want of See also:money. In the valley of the Huaraz See also:cattle are raised, and See also:wheat, See also:sugar and See also:fruit, See also:gold, See also:silver, See also:copper and See also:coal are produced. See also:Alfalfa is grown by stock-raisers, and the cattle raised here are among the best in the Peruvian See also:market. In the vicinity of Huaraz are megalithic ruins similar to those of Tiahunaco and See also:Cuzco, showing that the aboriginal See also:empire preceding the Incas extended into northern Peru.
