alkaloid found with See also:berberine in the See also:root of See also:golden See also:seal, Hydrastis canadensis, a plant indigenous to See also:North See also:America. It was discovered by See also:Durand in 1851, and its See also:chemistry formed the subject of numerous communications by E. See also:Schmidt and M. See also:Freund (see See also:Ann., 1892, 271, p. 311) who, aided by P. Fritsch (Ann., 1895, 286, p. I), established its constitution. It is related to narcotine, which is methoxy hydrastine. The root of golden seal is used in See also:medicine under the name See also:hydra stis rhizome, as a stomachic and nervine stimulant.
