ISTAHBANJIT , a See also:town and See also:district of See also:Persia in the See also:province of See also:Fars. The district, which is very fertile, extends for nearly 5o m. See also:east and See also:west along the See also:southern See also:shore of the Bakhtegan See also:lake and produces much See also:grain, See also:cotton, See also:good See also:tobacco and excellent See also:fruit, particularly pomegranates and grapes, walnuts and See also:figs. The town is situated in the midst of a See also:plain 12 M. from the eastern corner of the lake and about Too m. S.E. of See also:Shiraz, and has a See also:population of about ro,000. It occupies the site of the See also:ancient See also:city of Ij, the See also:capital of the cld province of Shabankareh, which was captured and partly destroyed by Mubariz ed-din, thefounder of the Muzaffarid See also:dynasty, in 1355. When rebuilt it became known by its See also:present name. Of the old See also:period a ruined See also:mosque and two colleges remain; other mosques and colleges are of See also:recent construction. At the entrance of the town stands a See also:noble chinar (See also:oriental See also:plane), measuring 45 ft. in circumference at 2 ft. from the ground.
