JIRECEK, JOSEF (1825–1888) , See also:Czech See also:scholar, was See also:born at Vysoke Myto in Bohemia on the 9th of See also:October 1825. He entered the See also:Prague See also:bureau of See also:education in 185o, and became See also:minister of the See also:department in the Hohenwart See also:cabinet in 1871. His efforts to secure equal educational privileges for the Slav nationalities in the See also:Austrian dominions brought him into disfavour with the See also:German See also:element. He became a member of the Bohemian See also:Land-tag in 1878, and of the Austrian Reichsrat in 1879. His merits as a scholar were recognized in 1875 by his See also:election as See also:president of the royal Bohemian See also:academy of sciences. He died in Prague on the 25th of See also:November 1888. With Hermenegild Jirecek he defended in 1862 the genuineness of the See also:Koniginhof MS. discovered by See also:Wenceslaus See also:Hanka. He published in the Czech See also:language an See also:anthology of Czech literature (3 vols., 1858-1861), a See also:biographical See also:dictionary of Czech writers (2 vols., 1875-1876), a Czech hymnology, See also:editions of Blahoslaw's Czech See also:grammar and of some Czech See also:classics, and of the See also:works of his See also:father-in-See also:law Pavel Josef Safarik (1795-1861). His See also:brother HERMENEGILD JIRE6EK, See also:Ritter von Samakow (1827– ), Bohemian jurisconsult, who was born at Vysoke Myto on the 13th of See also:April 1827, was also an See also:official in the education department. Among his important works on See also:Slavonic law were Codex See also:juris bohemici (11 parts, 1867–1892), and a Collection of Slav Folk-Law (Czech, 1880), Slav Law in Bohemia and See also:Moravia down to the 14th See also:Century (Czech, 3 vols. 1863–1873).
