KAITHAL, or KYTHAL , an See also:ancient See also:town of See also:British See also:India in See also:Karnal See also:district, See also:Punjab. Pop. (19o1), 14,408. It is said to have been founded by the mythical See also:hero Yudisthira, and is connected by tradition with the See also:monkey-See also:god See also:Hanuman. In 1767 it See also:fell into the hands of the See also:Sikh chieftain, Bhai Desu Singh, whose descendants, the bhais of Kaithal, ranked among the most powerful Cis-See also:Sutlej chiefs. Their territories lapsed to the British in 1843. There remain the fort of the bhais, and several See also:Mahommedan tombs of the 13th See also:century and later. There is some See also:trade in See also:grain, sal-ammoniac, live stock and blankets; and See also:cotton, See also:saltpetre, See also:lac ornaments and toys are manufactured.
