KANDI , a See also:

town of See also:British See also:India, in See also:Murshidabad See also:district, See also:Bengal. Pop. (1901), 12,037. It is the See also:residence of the rajas of Paikpara, a wealthy and devout See also:Hindu See also:family. The founder of this family was Ganga Govind Singh, the See also:banyan or See also:agent of See also:Warren See also:Hastings, who was See also:born at Kandi, and retired hither in his old See also:age with an immense See also:fortune. His name has acquired celebrity for the most magnificent sraddha, or funeral See also:obsequies, ever performed in Bengal, celebrated in See also:honour of his See also:mother, at a cost, it is said, of £200,000.
