WARREN , properly an old See also:

term of the See also:English See also:forest See also:law, derived from the O. Fr. See also:warenne, varenne, garenne (med. See also:Lat. warenna, warir, to guard, cf. " See also:ward "), and applied to one of the three lesser franchises, together with " See also:chase " and " See also:park," included under the highest See also:franchise, the " forest," and ranking last in See also:order of importance. The " beasts of warren " were the See also:hare, the coney (i.e. See also:rabbit), the See also:pheasant and the See also:partridge. The word thus became used of a piece of ground preserved for these beasts of warren. It is now applied loosely to any piece of ground, whether preserved or not, where rabbits breed (see FOREST See also:LAWS).
