KATTOWITZ , a See also:

town in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Silesia, on the Rawa, near the See also:Russian frontier, 5 M. S.E. from See also:Beuthen by See also:rail. Pop. (1875), 11,352; (1905), 35,772. There are large See also:iron-See also:works, foundries and See also:machine shops in the town, and near it See also:zinc and See also:anthracite mines. The growth of.Kattowitz, like that of other places in the same See also:district, has been very rapid, owing to the development of the See also:mineral resources of the See also:neighbour-See also:hood. In 1815 it was a See also:mere See also:village, and became a town in 1867. It has monuments to the emperors See also:William I. and See also:Frederick III. See G. Hoff See also:mann, Geschichte der Stadt Kattowitz (Kattowitz, 1895).
