KHIVA , See also:

capital of the khanate of Khiva, in Western See also:Asia, 25 M. W. of the Amu-darya and 240 M. W.N.W. of See also:Bokhara. Pop. about ro,000. It is surrounded by a See also:low earthen See also:wall, and has a citadel, the See also:residence of the See also:khan and the higher officials. There are a See also:score of mosques, of which the one containing the See also:tomb of Polvan, the See also:patron See also:saint of Khiva, is the best, and four large madrasas (See also:Mahommedan colleges). Large gardens exist in the western See also:part of the See also:town. A small See also:Russian See also:quarter has grown up. The inhabitants make carpets, silks and cottons.
