KOLGUEV , KoLGUEFF or KALGUYEV, an See also:

island off the See also:north-See also:west of See also:Russia in See also:Europe, belonging to the See also:government of See also:Arch-See also:angel. It lies about 50 M. from the nearest point of the mainland, and is of roughly See also:oval See also:form, 54 M. in length from N.N.E. to S.S.W. and 39 M. in extreme breadth. It lies in a shallow See also:sea, and is quite See also:low, the highest point being 250 ft. above the sea. See also:Peat-bogs and grass lands See also:cover the greater See also:part of the See also:surface; there are several considerable streams and a large number of small lakes. The island is of See also:recent See also:geological formation; it consists almost wholly of disintegrated See also:sandstone or See also:clay (which rises at the north-west into cliffs up to 6o ft. high), with scattered masses of See also:granite. Vegetation is scanty, but bears, foxes and other See also:Arctic animals, geese, swans, &c., provide means of livelihood for a few Samoyed hunters.
