LEOBEN , a See also:

town in See also:Styria, See also:Austria, 44 M. N.W. of See also:Graz by See also:rail. Pop. (190o) 10,204. It is situated on the Mur, and See also:part of its old walls and towers still remain. It has a well-known See also:academy of See also:mining and a number of technical See also:schools. Its extensive See also:iron-See also:works and See also:trade in iron are a consequence of its position on the See also:verge of the important See also:lignite deposits of Upper Styria and in the neighbourhood of the iron mines and furnaces of Vordernberg and See also:Eisenerz. On the 18th of See also:April 1797 a preliminary See also:peace was concluded here between Austria and See also:France, which led to the treaty of Campo-Formio.
