EISENERZ (" See also:Iron ore ") , a See also:market-See also:place and old See also:mining See also:town in See also:Styria, See also:Austria, 68 m. N.W. of See also:Graz by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 6494. It is situated in a deep valley, dominated on the See also:east by the Pfaffenstein (614o ft.), on the See also:west by the Kaiserschild (683o ft.), and on the See also:south by the Erzberg (5030 ft.). It has an interesting example of a See also:medieval fortified See also:church, a See also:Gothic edifice founded by See also:Rudolph of See also:Habsburg in the 13th See also:century and rebuilt in the 16th. The Erzberg or Ore See also:Mountain furnishes such See also:rich ore that it is quarried in the open See also:air like See also:stone, in the summer months. There is documentary See also:evidence of the mines having been worked as far back as the 12th century. They afford employment to two or three thousand hands in summer and about See also:half as many in See also:winter, and yield' some 800,000 tons of iron per annum. Eisenerz is connected with the mines by the Erzberg railway, a bold piece of See also:engineering See also:work, 14 M. See also:long, constructed on the See also:Abt's See also:rack-and-pinion See also:system. It passes through some beautiful scenery, and descends to Vordernberg (pop. 3111), an important centre of the iron See also:trade situated on the south See also:side of the Erzberg.

Eisenerz possesses, in addition, twenty-five furnaces, which produce iron, and particularly See also:

steel, of exceptional excellence. A few See also:miles to the N.W. of Eisenerz lies the See also:castle of Leopoldstein, and near it the beautiful Leopoldsteiner See also:Lake. This lake, with its dark-See also:green See also:water, situated at an See also:altitude of 2028 ft., and surrounded on all sides by high peaks, is not big, but is very deep, having a See also:depth of 520ft.
