town of See also:southern See also:Portugal, in the See also:district of See also:Faro (formerly the See also:province of See also:Algarve); beautifully situated in an inland hilly district, to m N.N.W. of the seaport of Faro and 5 M. from Sao Joao da Venda on the See also:Lisbon-Faro railway. Pop. (1900) 22,478. Apart from Lisbon, See also:Oporto and See also:Braga, Louie is the most populous town in the See also:kingdom. It is surrounded by walls and towers dating from the Moorish See also:period. The neighbouring See also:church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade is a favourite resort of pilgrims. See also:Basket-making is the See also:principal See also:industry; See also:leather, See also:porcelain and various products of the See also:palm, See also:agave and See also:esparto grass are also manufactured.
