LUNETTE (See also:French diminutive of lune, See also:moon) , a See also:crescent-shaped, semi-circular See also:object. The See also:term is particularly applied in See also:architecture to a circular opening at the intersection of vaulting by a smaller vault, as in a See also:ceiling for the entrance of See also:light or in the See also:lower stories of towers for the passage of bells. It is also used of a See also:panel space of semi-circular shape, filled by a See also:fresco or other decorative treatment. In fortification a " lunette " was originally an earthwork of See also:half-moon shape; later it became a See also:redan with See also:short flanks, in trace somewhat resembling a See also:bastion See also:standing by itself without curtains on either See also:side. The See also:gorge was generally open.
