MAGWE , a See also:district in the See also:Minbu See also:division of Upper See also:Burma. See also:Area, 2913 sq. m.; pop. (1901), 246,708, showing an increase of 12'38% in the See also:decade. Magwe may be divided into two portions: the See also:low, See also:flat See also:country in the Taungdwingyi subdivision, and the undulating high ground extending over the See also:rest of the district. In Taungdwingyi the See also:soil is See also:rich, loamy, and extremely fertile. The See also:plain is about 45 M. from See also:north to See also:south. At its See also:southern extremity it is about 30 M. wide, and lessens in width to the north till it ends in a point at Natmauk. On the See also:east are the See also:Pegu Yomas, which at some points reach a height of 1500 ft. A number of streams run westwards to the See also:Irrawaddy, of which the Yin and the See also:Pin, which See also:form the See also:northern boundary, are the See also:chief. The only perennial stream is the Yanpe. See also:Rice is the See also:staple product, and considerable quantities are exported. Sesamum of very high quality, See also:maize, and See also:millet are also cultivated, as well as See also:cotton in patches here and there over the whole district. In this district are included the well-known Yenangyaung See also:petroleum See also:wells. The See also:state wells have been leased to the Burma Oil See also:Company. The amount of oil-bearing lands is estimated at 8o sq. m. and the portion not leased to the company has been demarcated into blocks of 1 sq. m. and offered on See also:lease. The remaining See also:land belongs to hereditary Burmese owners called twinsa, who dig wells and See also:extract their oil by the rope and See also:pulley See also:system as they have always done. Lacquered See also:wood trays, See also:bowls and platters, and See also:cart-wheels, are the only manufactures of any See also:note in the district. The See also:annual rainfall averages about 27 inches. The maximum temperature rises to a little over See also:loo° in the hot See also:season, and falls to an See also:average minimum of 53° and 540 in the See also:cold season. The See also:town of MAGWE is the headquarters of the district; pop. (1901), 6232. It is diagonally opposite Minbu, the headquarters of the division, on the right See also:bank of the Irrawaddy.
