MANGALIA , a See also:

town in the See also:department of See also:Constantza See also:Rumania, situated on the See also:Black See also:Sea, and at the mouth of a small stream, the Mangalia, to m. N. of the Bulgarian frontier. Pop. (1900), 1459. The inhabitants, among whom are many See also:Turks and Bulgarians, are mostly fisherfolk. Mangalia is to be identified with the Thracian Kallatis or Acervetis, a See also:colony of See also:Miletus which continued to be a flourishing See also:place to the See also:close of the See also:Roman See also:period. In the 14th See also:century it had 30,000 inhabitants, and a large See also:trade with See also:Genoa.
