MAURIAC , a See also:

town of central See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Cantal, 39 m. N.N.W. of See also:Aurillac by See also:rail. Pop. (1906), 2558. Mauriac, built on the slope of a volcanic See also:hill, has a See also:church of the 12th See also:century, and the buildings of an old See also:abbey now used as public offices and dwellings; the town owes its origin to the abbey, founded during the 6th century. It is the seat of a sub-See also:prefect and has a tribunal of first instance and a communal See also:college. There are See also:marble quarries in the vicinity.
