MISIONES , a territory of See also:

northern See also:Argentina, bounded N. by See also:Paraguay and See also:Brazil, E. and S. by Brazil and W. by Paraguay and the See also:Argentine See also:province of See also:Corrientes. Its boundary lines are formed by the upper See also:Parana and Iguassfl See also:rivers on the N., the See also:San See also:Antonio and Pequiry-guassu streams on :the E. and the See also:Uruguay See also:River on the S. See also:Area, 11,282 sq. m.; pop. (1904, estimate), 38,755, chiefly See also:Indians and mestizos. The territory is a region of roughly-broken surfaces, divided longitudinally by See also:low mountains, called the Sierra Iman and Sierra Grande de Misiones, which See also:form the See also:water-parting for many small streams flowing northward to the Parana and southward to the Uruguay. The greater See also:part of the See also:country is covered with See also:forest and tropical See also:jungle. The See also:climate is sub-tropical, the temperature ranging from 40° to q5 F. The See also:soil. is described as highly fertile, but its products are chiefly confined to yerba See also:mate or Paraguay See also:tea (Ilex paraguayensis), See also:tobacco and oranges and other fruits. Communication with the See also:capital is maintained by two lines of steamboats See also:running to Corrientes and Buenos Aires, but a See also:rail-way across Paraguay from Asunci6n is planned to Encarnaci6n, opposite Posadas. Some of the Jesuit See also:missions of the 17th and 18th centuries were established in this territory, and are to-See also:day represented by the lifeless villages of Candelaria, See also:Santa See also:Ana, San Ignacio and Corpus along the Parana River, and Ap6stoles, Concepci6n, and San Javier along the Uruguay. Posadas (estimated pop. in 1905, 8000), the capital, on the Parana, officially See also:dates from 1865. It was also a Jesuit See also:settlement called Itapua, though the large See also:mission of that name was on the Paraguayan See also:side of the river.

It is at the extreme See also:

west of the territory, and is the terminal See also:port for the steamers from Corrientes.
