N.E. of the See also:city of Orel. Pop. (1900), 9390• It is 954 mentioned in the See also:Russian See also:chronicles as See also:early as 1147. From 1320 to 1530 it was under the See also:rule of Lithuania; in the latter See also:year it was taken by Russia, and became one of her See also:chief strongholds against the raids of the See also:Tatars. It is now an important centre for See also:trade in See also:grain, See also:hemp, hemp-See also:seed oil, See also:tobacco and See also:spirits.
