MTSKHET , a decayed See also:

town of See also:Russian See also:Transcaucasia, in the See also:government of See also:Tiflis, 13 M. by See also:rail N.N.W. of the See also:city of Tiflis, at the confluence of the Aragva with the Kura, at an See also:altitude of 1515 ft. Pop. (1897), 1221. One of the See also:oldest places in See also:Georgia, it was the See also:capital of that See also:country until supplanted by Tiflis in the last See also:year of the 5th See also:century A.D. The most See also:ancient seat of the Georgian See also:kings was the See also:castle of Arma-tsikhe, Armasis, or Harmozica, crowning a See also:hill opposite to Mtskhet. The most memorable relic of the latter is the See also:cathedral, said to have been originally founded in the 4th century, though the existing See also:building See also:dates from the 15th century and was restored in the 18th. In the graveyard attached to this See also:convent See also:graves have been opened which yielded See also:objects of the See also:Iron and See also:Stone ages, and others of the era of the See also:Roman See also:emperor See also:Augustus.
