It is the highest point accessible for See also:steam See also:traffic on the West river. From Canton to Wuchow the river has a minimum See also:depth of 8 It., but on the See also:section from Wuchow to Nanning not more than 3 or 4 ft. are found during See also:winter. The See also:town is the See also:chief See also:market on the See also:southern frontier. Its opening was See also:long opposed by the See also:French See also:government, who had acquired the right to build a railway to it from See also:Tongking, by which they hoped to divert the See also:trade through their own possessions. See also:Navigation by small native boats is open west-wards as far as Paise.
