S.E. of See also:Manchester, on the Midland and the See also:London & See also:North-Western See also:railways. Pop. (1901) 7773. Its See also:ancient name was Bowden See also:Middle Cale. The name of New Mills was given to it from a See also:corn-See also:mill erected on the Kinder in the See also:hamlet of 011ersett, and is specially applied to the See also:group of factories which have grown up See also:round it. Formerly See also:paper and See also:cloth were the See also:staple See also:industries of the district, but the inhabitants of the various hamlets are now occupied chiefly in See also:iron and See also:brass foundries, See also:cotton mills and See also:print-See also:works. A See also:short See also:branch of the Midland railway leads to the See also:town of Hayfield (pop. 2614).

There is no longer a branch line of the Midland Railway to Hayfield. It has been converted to a Bridleway. The main industries in the town have dwindles to a few metal and engineering works, the main town emplyer is Swizzels Matlow the sweet manufacturer and maker of the famous Love Hearts. The town is now a mecca for Indian Restaurants and takeaways plus a large number of Chinese takeaways.
